If you have been following us over the past few weeks, you may have noticed the announcement of our watch recycling program. Although this initiative is part of our sustainable business actions, we felt it was important to push the idea even further. Because recycling is good, but consuming thoughtfully is even better.

With this in mind, we are excited to announce our transition to new materials for all our watch models; certified recycled stainless steel.

Why Transition to Watches Made from Recycled Metal?

If you've ever shopped for watches, you've probably noticed the wide variety of recycled watch options available, including those made from recycled plastic. Although recycled plastic is a good alternative to many materials, we have preferred to look at another material that is just as interesting.

Of course, continuing to use plastic, even recycled, does not reduce our dependence on this polluting material as a society, even if this solution is currently incredibly innovative and environmentally responsible. In fact, did you know that plastic cannot be recycled endlessly? It can only be recycled two to three times1. It then becomes a waste product. In the USA, only 8.7% of plastic material generated is recycled in the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) stream2.

In light of this, you may have understood why we did not choose this material. As an eco-responsible company, we were eager to take a stand for the future, becoming a leader today that will become a leader of tomorrow over time. For us, it is essential to use existing materials to make new products.

It’s no surprise that certified recycled stainless steel was quickly on our radar. As a matter of fact, it’s an incredible material, since it is 100% recyclable and can be recycled over and over again. Its properties also make this material extra strong and of the highest quality -- Another step forward for slow fashion. You won't be surprised to learn that it has been used for decades to manufacture watches.

And, not only that, stainless steel is beautifully aesthetic; a finish that plastic, unfortunately, cannot match!

What will be the Main Differences on the Watch Finish Made with Recycled Steel?

You will be happy to know that there will be no difference! We have teamed up with global experts to ensure that the quality of recycled steel is as good as virgin steel.

As for the visual aspect, the signature look of Solios watches will remain the same. Actually, we have found ways to increase the density of the steel in each case, making it possible to apply the same polishing techniques as for virgin steel. This way of doing things allows us to give the same ultra-elegant look to our watches, now made from recycled materials.

However, the only notable (and positive!) difference is that using certified recycled stainless steel for our watches will have a much lower environmental impact than pure stainless steel. In fact, this one must be drawn from the resources of the Earth. By eliminating this step, we help the health of the planet. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, recycling steel, rather than mining it, results in an energy savings of 75% and a reduction in :

  • air pollution of 86%
  • water use of 40%
  • water pollution of 76%
  • mining wastes of 97%
  • consumer wastes of 105%.3

How will this Transition take Place?

We are very pleased to be in the final stages of production of our first series of recycled steel watches. We will start distributing them in May 2021.
